PRAYER FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERS



Wondrous God, author of life,
you fashioned us in your likeness
and breathed into us
the life which is your own.


Be with all the men and women in health care, whose special care
is the health of mind and body.

As they serve the sick and those in need,

Fill their hearts with awe
for the life which is your gift.



Sustain them daily in your service,
that their hands may bring to others
the comfort of your healing touch.



Be with them in this special time of crisis with the Coronavirus.

Keep them safe as they offer their lives in service and compassion to others.

Give them strong faith and trust in your providential care.

May they never doubt your saving presence at work in their lives.



We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.

Take on the Heart of Jesus

The Gospel story at today's Mass is a difficult one to hear at first.  Jesus appears to be rude to the Canaanite woman who is pleading for her daughter's life.  "Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David!"  These are startling words coming from a Gentile.  At first Jesus appears to be ignoring her.  He doesn't answer or even look her way.  The disciples want to send her away so annoyed are they at her behavior.  Then Jesus himself seems to dismiss her as well:  "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel."  But this woman is undaunted in her desire to get Jesus' attention.  She believes with all her heart that he can help her and cure her daughter who is tormented by a demon.  She continues to call out, unfazed by her dismissal.  "Lord help me!" she cries out again.  What determination and strength of character.  She will not give up.  She keeps calling out to the Lord in her misery.  Once again, Jesus appears to...

Where He has gone, we hope to follow

This week we are celebrating the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord.  While most dioceses in the United States and throughout the world have moved the Ascension to the following Sunday,  we in the Diocese of Pittsburgh still celebrate the Ascension on the exact day - 40 days after Easter.  Only in the northeast provinces of Philadelphia, New York and New England is this traditional Ascension day so celebrated! We profess our faith in this glorious mystery when we say in the Nicene Creed:   He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father . We believe that Jesus’ earthly life reached its culmination when He passed from this world to the Father. He no longer belongs to the world of corruption and death that conditions our earthly life. WE DO NOT LOSE HEART

We are living in unprecedented times and for most us we have not experienced anything like what is happening around us.  With the numbers of those testing positive for the Coronavirus increasing every day, and the risk to so many increasing exponentially, every precaution must be taken for the well-being of everyone.  I can only imagine the burden in Bishop Zubik's heart in announcing new restrictions yesterday for the Church of Pittsburgh.  I encourage you to take time to read his letter on www.diopitt.org.  As he says, "Today's decisions are excruciating and among the most difficult to make."
