TRUE HEROES

My sister Beth is a nurse.  Every day she makes her way to the hospital.  There are not sufficient masks but there are patients needing the care of doctors and nurses.  Every day they come to care for the sick and offer the best support they can.   The son of a good friend of mine, Quinton, goes every day to Trader Joe's.  Some of the employees refuse to work out of fear and anxiety of being infected. But Quinton comes, wearing a mask, doing his best to allow people to buy the groceries and supplies they need to survive.  My classmate, Father Mark, continues to don his protective gear as a hospital chaplain to hear confessions, anoint and bless the sick and dying, despite being told he should stay away. We have parishioners in our parish grouping whom I will not name, police officers, paramedics, firefighters, first responders, those who put their lives at risk in service to others. They are coming to work, doing the best they can to be safe, but doing their jobs and helping people every single day regardless of the risk.  I have a dear friend, Zach, who serves in the United States Armed Forces.  He is setting up emergency hospital tents and beds in New York City. He is working 18 hours a day, barely sleeping or eating, but serving his country and the needs of others with little regard to himself.

These are the heroes of our country.  Forget the sports superstars, Hollywood elite, business CEO's and grandstanding reporters.  I stand with our President who works around the clock for the good of our country and those who have stood in solidarity with and our country in offering their lives for us at great cost to themselves. These are our heroes.  It is easy for those in public office, in positions of authority to criticize and to throw blame.  That's easy and safe. It is another thing entirely to put yourself front and center, in the midst of a pandemic like none we have seen before, and try to do serve.  We have so many heroes, from President Trump on down - doing the best they can to guide our nation through this crisis.  It was not of our own making.  No one is to blame.  But our heroes are those who seek to serve, to offer their lives in service. to find solutions, to offer kindness and support to those in need. We can each do that in our own way.  Tragedies have a way of bringing out the worst or best in people.  Lets support our heroes - those trying to do something and push aside the naysayers   We salute our heroes and will never forget how they have risen to the challenge and willingly offered their lives in service to others.  Their reward will be great in heaven.
